Collections Purchase Samples Ideas/Tips Applique Help Guides

A tutorial to help you understand applique "our way."

All of our applique designs, purchased and sample downloads, come with color stitch-order text files. The information below will help clarify the applique process. For our example we are using our sample mitten download found in the "applique" section on the SAMPLES page.
Depending upon the design, there might be more than one "applique position" and "applique material" color stops. And they will not necessarily always be the first color stops to stitch. With our mitten design, the first color stop to stitch is the string. Follow along A...B...C.......

STEP A:

STEP B:

1. First color stop to stitch is the mitten string.

2. Applique Position. This color stop indicates the applique position of the first mitten.

At this point, lightly spray a piece of scrap fabric with a temporary spray adhesive and lay the fabric over the mitten outline.

3. Applique material. This color stop will stitch the mitten outline again, securing the applique fabric to the item being embroidered.

STEP C:

STEP D:

DO NOT unhoop the fabric. Remove the hoop from the embroidery machine and very carefully trim the applique fabric close to the stitching taking care not to clip the stitches. Very sharp, curved scissors work best.

4 & 5. Steps four and five will stitch the mittens ribbed cuff.

6. The sixth color stop will complete the first mitten by creating a satin stitch border over the raw edges of the applique fabric.

7. Applique Position. This color stop indicates the applique position of the second mitten.

STEP E:

STEP F:

Once again, lightly spray a piece of scrap fabric with a temporary spray adhesive and lay the fabric over the mitten outline.

8. Applique material. This color stop will stitch the mitten outline again, securing the applique fabric to the item being embroidered. Once the eighth color stop is stitched, trim the excess fabric before continuing.

9 & 10. Steps nine and ten will stitch the mittens ribbed cuff.

11. The eleventh color stop will complete the first mitten by creating a satin stitch border over the raw edges of the applique fabric.

STEP G:

Depending upon the design, there may be additional embroidery added to the appliqued piece such as the mitten on the left. Steps twelve, thirteen, and fourteen will complete the design by stitching the two little patches over the applique material. These last three steps may be omitted if desired.
